The “Center Flow” design was a result of considerable research by ACF Industries during the late 1950s and early 1960s into ways to make a hopper that was “self-cleaning,” with no corners for material to become stuck. Quick to load and unload, its strong and lightweight design allows larger payloads. Center flow hoppers were a common sight on the Burlington Northern, and they still are on BN’s successor, the BNSF.
