LGB 21761 - Stoomlok Spremberger Stadtbahn
Spremberger Stadtbahn Steam Loco
Despite its small size – just 6.15 meters (20.2 feet) long – this loco was a thoroughly modern steam locomotive in its time. Built in 1925 by Borsig, it employed steam superheating, piston valves and Walschaerts valve gear. It went to work on the Spremberger Stadtbahn, a 17 km (10 mi.) narrow gauge line that carried coal in the Lausitz region of eastern Germany. This LGB classic features Spremberger livery and lettering along with a detailed and lighted cab. A voltage stabilization circuit powers the lights and smoke generator.
The Prototype
In 1898, the German town of Spremberg, located east of Berlin in the Lausitz region, built a narrow gauge line with 17 km (10.5 miles) of tracks. The railway connected the town's textile factories and other industries to the standard gauge station. In addition, two lines went to local mines which supplied the town with coal. Trains consisted of narrow gauge cars as well as standard gauge cars on "rollböcke" (small narrow gauge trolleys that fit under each wheelset of a standard gauge car). Most of the railway's locomotives were small four-wheel steam locos that were able to negotiate the extremely tight curves in the city streets and on the factory grounds. The prototype of the LGB model was built by Borsig in Berlin in 1925. Despite its small size, it was a thoroughly modern design with a large superheated boiler, piston valves and Walschaerts valve gear. The powerful machine remained in service on the Spremberg line until the railway closed in 1956. Later, the loco was overhauled and used on the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) Harzquer line.
