Sicher sind Dampfloks romantischer, doch kann man die betriebswirtschaftlichen Vorteile einer Diesellok nicht verleugnen. Dieselloks bieten mehr Zugkraft, wobei Arbeitsaufwand, Wartung und Kosten geringer sind. Um die Vorteile beider Traktionsarten zu nutzen, verwenden die Rügenschen Kleinbahnen Dampfloks im Personenverkehr und eine moderne Diesellok im Streckendienst. Beim LGB-Modell gibt die digitale Geräuschelektronik die Geräusche einer echten Diesellok wieder, einschließlich Anlaßgeräusch, Dieselmotor, Hilfsdiesel, Luftkompressor und Horn.
The Prototype
To replace aging steam locomotives on their narrow gauge branch lines, the German Railways (DB) purchased five modern diesel-hydraulic locomotives. Two 270 horsepower diesel engines are mounted under the long front hood, while the short hood conceals the air compressor, air reservoir and fuel tanks. These locomotives served their communities in southwestern Germany until their rail lines were abandoned. One of the original five, however, found a new life on the Rügenschen Kleinbahnen on the Baltic island of Rügen, where it has operated since 1999.
